Bleeding |
You will have some oozing of blood, but not profuse
bleeding. It is normal to have blood in your saliva and a taste of
blood in your mouth during the first 24-28 hours after your surgery.
If there is excessive bleeding, place wet gauze in the area for 15
minutes. If the bleeding persists then try with a wet regular tea
bag (not herbal) in the area and call the office any time day or night.
|
Swelling |
You may have swelling in the surgical area. This
is normal. Place an ice pack (or frozen vegetables) wrapped in a light
towel over the surgery area immediately after surgery. Leave the pack
on for fifteen minutes and off for fifteen minutes, alternating for
the first 6 hours after surgery.
|
Oral Hygiene |
Do no rinse or spit for the first 24 hours following
surgery. After 24 hours, rinse with Chlorhexidine (Peridex, Perioguard)
two times per day or with warm salt water 4-6 times per day.
|
Diet |
Eat as well as possible; your comfort is your best
guide as to what to eat.
Do not eat popcorn, peanuts, raisins and/or other small, hard
types of foods.
Do not drink using a straw.
|
Pain |
Take the pain medication prescribed as directed.
If rashes, itching or nausea occur, stop taking the medication and
call immediately.
Do not ingest alcohol (or other recreational drugs) while taking
pain medication; this could prove deadly.
|
Activity |
Aerobic exercise, jogging, lifting and other heavy
types of activities should be restricted for 48 hours following surgery.
Do not smoke for 24 hours following surgery, as it may increase bleeding
and slow the healing process.
|
Guided Tissue Regeneration |
If you have a membrane placed (guided tissue regeneration),
you must rinse with the Chlorhexidine (Peridex, Perioguard) 2 times
per day for six weeks following surgery.
|
Do not brush the area unless you have been
told to do so specifically by the doctor or staff.
Please feel free to call the office at 415.392.2086 anytime
if you have any problems or concerns.
Please return to our office in 7 to 10 days for post-operative evaluation.
